Washing machine problems: what the common faults mean

4 August 2026 · 4 min read

Washing machines usually warn you before they fail completely. Recognising the symptom early keeps the repair small.

Not draining or water left in the drum

Almost always a blocked filter, drain hose or pump impeller — coins, hair and lint are typical culprits. Clean the filter at the bottom front of the machine first; if the pump hums without draining, it needs replacing.

Not spinning

An unbalanced load, a worn drive belt, failed motor brushes or a faulty door lock can all stop the spin cycle. Redistribute the laundry once; if it recurs on every wash, book a visit.

Leaking water

Check the inlet hose connections and the door gasket for tears. Leaks from the base usually mean a failing pump or tub seal, which should be looked at quickly to avoid damaging the floor.

Loud banging or walking across the floor

Level the machine and confirm the transit bolts were removed after installation. Persistent noise on spin often means worn drum bearings or shock absorbers.

Machine will not start

Verify the socket, the water supply tap and that the door is properly latched. Beyond that, the door interlock or control board is the usual fault.
